NOTE: Restored Koine Greek Pronunciation (Hellenistic) is used in these recordings.

This course is designed to introduce Ancient Greek and Roman-era Greek (Koine or Hellenistic) , via the intermediary route of formal-register Early Modern Greek, followed by various textbooks and resources for Attic and Hellenistic Greek..

Textbooks have been chosen that use this methodology.

This method was strongly recommended by Blackie, in his lecture "On the Living Language of the Greeks and its Utility to the Classical Scholar"

Pronunciation

I have decided to move to a Koine / Hellenistic pronunciation scheme. This is the pronunciation used during the Imperial Roman period.

Koine / Hellenistic Greek pronunciation is closer to Modern Greek pronunciation than the restored classical Attic.

Katharefousa and Hellenistic Greek

For the relationship between Early Modern Greek and Ancient , see :-

The Modern Greek Language in its Relation to Ancient Greek by Geldart (1870) (Note: This text is academic.)

The Modern Greek, its pronunciation and relations to Ancient Greek by T.T. Timayenis (1877) (Note: This text is slightly bombastic!)

The Greek spoken today is a fusion between the Demotic and the 'Classicised' early modern varieties of Greek, such as that used by Stedman. See the Wikipedia article on early Modern Greek Καθαρεύουσα

THE COURSE

The course as I propose to develop it (it is a work in progress):

1. Ollendorff's Greek Method

Index to Ollendorff's Greek and English Method After much searching, I located Nikolaos Kontopoulos' version of ολλενδορφείου μεθόδοs. An online copy of this textbook can be found at the Hathi Trust's online library. This is the Greek version of Adler's translation of Ollendorff - not to be confused with Kendrick's Ancient Greek version of Ollendorff. Kontopoulis' translation is in a heavily Atticised (deliberately antiqued) academic Early Modern Greek. The Key to his textbook can be found at the Anemi Digital Library.*The Ollendorff Method? If you don't know what this is, have a read of this. This is the same method as used in my Adler Latin Course.

2. LAAS D'AGUEN STREAMING FILES

Index to Laas D'Aguen Koine (Restored Hellenistic - Koine Pronunciation)

Purpose: to rapidly learn vocabulary. This is always easier with some sort of context, which Laas D'Aguen provides. This textbook also has some verb paradigms in the first section, contained in very brief sentences.

This is a recorded version of Laas D'Aguen (Text) using a reconstructed Koine pronunciation scheme.

2 a. LAAS D'AGUEN ZIP FILES

Lesson 1 - 20 ZIP

Lesson 21 - 40 ZIP

Lesson 41 - 66 ZIP

3. BAIRD

1000 Greek Words (normal speed)

1000 Greek Words (fast)

Purpose: to rapidly learn vocabulary. The word in Greek, followed by an English translation, and then followed by three repetitions of each word in Greek. How to use this: Repeat along with me.

4. STEDMAN

A Short Road to Ancient Greek

An Index to the Audio Recordings for 'A Short Road to Ancient Greek'

(The Text)

Stedman in this version will be recorded using Hellenistic (Koine) pronunciation. Stedman uses the ancient forms of words, where available. The textbook points out the differences between Early Modern and Ancient Greek grammar as he proceeds.

4 b. STEDMAN - ZIP Files

Lesson 1 -18 ZIP

~ ORBIS GRAECO-LATINUS

Index to the Audio Recordings for Comenii Orbis Sensualium Pictus Graeco-Latinus (Text)

Purpose: to rapidly learn vocabulary. This is always easier with some sort of context, which Comenius provides.

The Orbis is designed for vocabulary learning, while exposing youto a wide range of basic sentence structures. You would need to have studied the English-Latin Orbis first to benefit from this text.

~ Manuale Latino-Graecum

(Vocabulary arranged by topic)

Hint: Use the fast playback facility on VLC media player for revision.

Then follows Kendrick's Attic Greek course, which includes formal grammar:-

~ KENDRICK Greek Ollendorff

Greek Ollendorff - Attic Greek Course, with similarities to Adler's Practical Grammar of the Latin Language. The is probably the most accessible Classical Greek course in existence. (Text)

~ JOHNSON

An Index to the Audio Recordings for Do You Speak Attic? (Sprechen Sie Attisch?)

This text provides a Greek phrasebook of Attic Greek, using a reconstructed classical pronunciation scheme covering a range of topics.

~ DAWES ATTIC VOCABULARY

An Index to the Audio Recordings for Dawes' Attic Vocabulary

Dawes compiled a useful student classified vocabulary - where the words are organised by subject matter. Only the most important words are included in this compilation.

~ RUDIMENTA MINORA (Restored Classical Pronunciation)

An Index to the Graecae Grammaticae Rudimenta Minora

This is a bare-bones Greek Grammar, written in simple and clear Latin.

~ EVERYDAY GREEK (Restored Classical Pronunciation)

Hoffman's useful book takes the Ancient Greek words found in English, and uses them to craft an introduction to Greek Vocabulary, which is useful for beginners. Hoffman will show you that you already know a lot more Greek than you thought you did.

01 The Parts of Speech

02 Compound Words

~ Blackie's Dialogues, and then other introductory Greek readers will be introduced.

~ Bayer's ' Paedagogus Graecus Latinae Juventutis, Sive Lexicon Latino-Graecum' (Text)
